Islands + Boats = Good Ole Fashion Trisler Fun

This past weekend we had our first out of town visitors: Mom and Dad Trisler! We had been looking forward to this visit so much; brooke was counting down the days like a little boy waiting for Christmas!

we had a weekend full of fun and adventure. from fridays evenings visit to Pike Place Market and the REI Flagship Store to saturdays romp around the Puget Sound's islands and ferries, we couldn't get our fill of 'visitin'.' we even spent some quality time walking along the Cedar River spotting out sockeye salmon and looking at all 514 floating homes on Lake Union... somehow we even managed to score a tour!

saturday's road trip itinerary.
growing up brooke's parents would pack the car,
load the brothers, and see how many miles they could
drive in one weekend. he vaguely remembers one
childhood weekend that included fish-n-chips and
10ooo miles of driving.
he decided it was payback time!

the only two ladies in the current Trisler Family;
and what ladies they are!

the first stop on our whirlwind-of-a-day was Langley
on Whidbey Island. this town has everything a person
could dream of: a tiny harbor with sea stars, a little
town with just the necessities, and an amazing coffee shop:
useless bay coffee. the above is right on the harbor and was
called the boat yard inn. i think the family will stay
here on their next visit!

Mom and Dad Trisler at the Historic Coupeville
Wharf.

someday, this will also be a Mom and Dad Trisler.

while in coupeville, on whidbey island, andrea had a
mission to find 'the one that got away.' we looked at the
above cottage, when planning our move west, but
unfortunately someone else snatched it from us!
we found it...and it was more awesome then the photos!

on saturday we rode three different ferries. while onboard
one of them, we found a newspaper that reported of a guy
who rode all of the washington state ferries in one day!
the above is our second, the klickitat. Mom got a kick that
we were taking the klickitat to kitsap.

it was a beautiful day to walk around our favorite town:
port townsend.
we stopped at Pygmy Boats to show Dad their selection
of wooden kayaks...he was quite impressed. their shop is in
this cool little harbor next to a boat yard; so naturally we had
to have a look. in our family, his Dad is infamous with
finding many things, but two worthy of noting here are cool
boat yards and bakeries. to this day i'm not quite sure how he
does it. he'll say, "turn down here son." and low-and-behold,
there's something sweet! i guess it's a "Dad" trick.

on the peir in port townsend, washington before we
hit up another boat yard on the way down to
bainbridge island.

on the last ferry boat ride of the day from bainbridge island
to downtown seattle. 6.5 seconds worth of exposure time +
a windy boat ride home ≠ good pictures...
although i know it will end up on justin's desktop!

on sunday we decided to take it a little easier. we started our
morning with a stroll along the Cedar River in the rain to catch
a peek at the sockeye salamon 'doing you know what.' actually,
most of them were dead by now, but there were still a few fightin'
to the bitter end. Mom and Dad marveled a the size and colors
of these guys. Mom couldn't get over their behavior and Dad kept
moving down the river to see more and more.

Although there is no picture evidence, later we drove up to lake union to look at all the floating homes. Much to our surprise we were able to tour one that was for sale.

All and all it was a great weekend and look forward to seeing more of these characters over Christmas! Thanks for stopping out our way!

i actually like the blurry picture of seattle as my background too, but i can't look at it too long, it makes me sea sick.

i took a picture of Mt. Rainer on my computer screen. i will send later. but you don't have to send me anything. i did turn a little so you can see a pretty palm in the back ground...

We had such a good time last weekend! We did a lot of stuff, but the best part of the whole trip, was the hug in the airport when we arrived. It was just so good to see you both there in person!

I have new respect and admiration for the boys having been dragged around in the backseat all their life to look at boats and harbors. Between all the riding and the 3 hour time change I was dozing off before the last of the ferry rides. For those of you who enjoy Brooke's humor...... Brooke asked me a question to which he got no response because I was limp-necked in the backseat. He said, "Mom?" I snapped to and said, "You have to remember that even though we haven't had supper here yet, this is usually the time that I get my shower and sit down to the news before I go to bed." Without missing a beat, Brooke said, "Well, I have a wetnap in the glove box and I could turn on NPR if that would help!"

Andrea has decorated their "studio apartment with alcove" to perfection as only she can, and they were both excellent hosts. I urge any of you to go out and see them. We stayed in an excellent Quality Inn just down the street from them at a very reasonable price. Andrea and Brooke actually sleep in a spacious bedlivdining room, which includes their kitchbathpantry. But it was a great place for a delicious meal prepared by Andrea, even if I did knock over an end table reaching for the salt and pepper.

I want to report that they are healthy and happy and enjoying West Coast life. They are both enjoying their jobs, learning new things every day and are living life as it should be. We had lots of talk, lots of laughs, new sights, and enjoyed being together. We watched them throw fish at Pike Street, ate lots of seafood, visited the original Starbucks and managed to keep Dad with the group most of the time. I am looking forward to going back soon. There is still more to see, more to talk about, and I think I need to check up on the progress of those salmon in Cedar River.

a couple things:

- those long jaunts being packed in the car and driving to God-knows-where is how we found pensacola before moving here. our vacations since we married 17 years ago have always consisted of a packed bag, a packed cooler, and enough money to pay for gas and a hotel or two. nothing quite like TRYING to get lost and discovering awesome stuff along the way!

- i'm partial to the blurry skyline pic - we intentionally took some shots like that of our christmas tree & frankly i like em better than the regular ones.

- dude, your mom sounds freakin' cool!

I have been called a lot of things in my life, but I think this is the first time for "freakin' cool!" I like it...it has a nice ring to it! :)

I remember the first time a student said in class, " Dr. T is Phat!" I think he could tell from the look on my face that I thought he said , "Dr. T is Fat!" Since it was the day before final exams, he jumped quickly into an explanation of "Phat."

Someone wrote on my message board on my door this weekend, "Dr. T is awesome!" I just now wrote under it, "No she isn't. She is freakin' cool!" Can't wait to hear their comments!

Rustypants, you have created a monster!

mom, that's the funniest thing i've heard in a long time. i can only imagine your students walking up to your message board, reading it, turning to walk away with a grin and saying under their breath, 'she is freaking cool!'

your co-workers is a whole other story :)!
